Tips when photographing your art

Many artists want to share photos of their work but do not present their work in the best way.

Here are some tips on preparing photos of your art using your cell phone:

1.  Try to photograph your art in natural light or take it outside to show the true colours and highlights. An overcast day might be best for this.  Take several photos in these locations to determine where you find the best colour results.

2.   If photographing in your house, choose a plain background wall or floor. Remember you want to show the work in its’ truest colour.

3.  Even lighting is important. Do not cast shadows on your work.  

4.  Position your artwork on an easel or on the floor so that you can squarely approach it; do not approach it from one side or from above or below. 

5.  The use of a tripod (or hold the camera still as possible) will keep things steady. Capture the artwork as squarely as possible 

6.  Crop way distracting backgrounds and the frame. These elements take away from the art and make the photograph seem too busy.
