2020 Members Show @ Noveltea, Truro

September 2020

It is completely devastating to hear of the fire last night at the Novel Tea Bookstore and Cafe. For many, the 622 Prince Street location was Truro’s touchstone to coffee culture which could transport a person into a place of colour, art, and style. At the Cafe you could come quietly by yourself to be alone among many, or come with friends to laugh and share stories. Our hearts go out to Vonda and Keith and the staff, for this loss will affect the whole town.

TAS grieves as well, for Novel Tea had generously permitted us to exhibit art on the walls of the the cafe. The TAS Members Fundraising exhibit was mounted just yesterday, Sunday afternoon 13 September, and we are struggling to accept that fire has claimed the building; we are unbelievably saddened by the loss of it all.

We know all the works were created with love and that is the loss we cannot replace. It is very sad when artwork is destroyed in the fire because it cannot be returned to the creator nor can it be enjoyed by anybody any more.

We want to send our sympathies to those who had donated their work.

Above are the artworks from the exhibition and lost in the fire.

Jane Grady and Judith Newman

Noveltea until 31 August 2020

We spotlight Jane Grady whose work is currently on display at Novel Tea. Throughout her journey as a visual artist, Jane’s creative intention is to evoke whimsical feelings in the viewer, and you can see all of these examples for yourself in her work which are on display until the end of August.

Trained as both an artist and educator, Jane began her studies at Guildford School Art and Design and attained her Bachelors of Education degree (with license in Special Education) at UNB in Fredricton; she is certified to teach in N.S, N.B. and Sk.

In addition to training as an educator, her work in graphic design led her to begin a career in freelance illustration from the early 1970’s. This path also included exhibiting her work in many regional public and private venues, most recently at the Grace Jollymore Joyce Centre for the Arts in Tatamagouche. Illustrating both commercially and personally,  Jane designed business materials, fliers, books, and advanced to preparing her own original illustrated letters and stories.

We also spotlight Judith Newman.  Whether constructing a quilt, a wall hanging, garment,  or other fabric pieces, Judith explores the world using textiles and thread.   She has sewn garments most of her adult life and became a serious fibre artist in 2006 with her goal to create functional objects which embodied artistic expression and aesthetic value.

Judith turns her quilts into useful modern works of art using colourful, batik fabrics in both large scale and subtle prints that incorporate traditional quilting techniques in non-traditional ways. She improvises her compositions building on the design foundations of colour and texture. Some of her quilts are based on photographs which incorporates a “thread painting” technique involving  extracting elements from the design using additional threads to increase the colour density. Her goal for each new art piece is to  challenge her skills in sewing, quilting, embroidery and design.

Judith loves the complex decision-making that fibre art involves and increasingly spends her quilting time creating textile wall art.
